A return to our series of audio interviews with customer insight & analytics leaders, this time my guest is Tom Lloyd.

Tom is the Managing Director of MetaMetrics. As you hear in our conversation, his agency focusses on applying Econometrics and helping clients measure what drives their sales. With so much experience of applying marketing analytics & modelling for clients, Tom has plenty of practical advice to share with us.

This interview follows on from our interview with Sameer Rahman at EDIT. Like Sameer, Tom offers us the perspective of an agency-side leader. Tom shares a research or customer insight background with Elsbeth Kottelenberg from UBM, to balance those I’ve interviewed from a Data Science background. As Managing Director, Tom also brings the perspective of a business leader.

Our audio interviews with Customer Insight Leaders: (7) Sameer Rahman

Continuing our series of audio interviews with customer insight leaders, this time it was Sameer Rahman.

Sameer is the Director of Data Science at the agency EDIT. After a background in IT, risk modelling & marketing, Sameer has deliberately forged a leadership career. He describes himself as having “his head in data & his heart in marketing“. Both shone through as we talked.

This interview provides a useful complement to the client-side leader interviews we have published previously. Giving us insights into the skills, challenges & priorities for agency-side leaders. Sameer is also the Chairman of the CIM in Wales, so we touched on the role of that professional body in educating marketers.

Audio interviews with Customer Insight Leaders: (6) Ryan den Rooijen

Continuing our series of audio interviews with customer insight leaders, this time it was Ryan den Rooijen.

Ryan leads Dyson’s Global Data Services organisation, who work on transforming the company’s analytical capabilities. From manufacturing to marketing, their work spans the breadth of Dyson. Previously, Ryan spent four and a half years at Google, where he led the development of the global sales analyst curriculum. Most of his work involves the practical application of big data analytics – impact, not buzzwords.

This was a fabulous interview, clearly revealing Ryan’s experience. I can see why DataIQ has repeatedly named him one of the most influential people in today’s data-driven businesses. As Ryan mentions during our chat, he also completed an MSc in Social Science of the Internet at the University of Oxford. (more…)

Time for another of our audio interviews with Customer Insight Leaders, this time it’s Elsbeth Kottelenberg.

This is another good conversation with a leader, in a different sector again. UBM is a global events company, with Elsbeth supporting Pharma events around the world. She also differs from previous interviewees through her background in qualitative research.

During this interview we discussed her career to date, some segmentation projects within UBM, the challenges of retaining analysts & evidencing ROI. It was interesting to hear from a leader who not only has market research experience but is managing data analysts. That prompted us to talk about the convergence of analytics & research, as we’ve shared before.

Time for another of our audio interviews, with senior Customer Insight Leaders, this time it’s Gwilym Morrison.

A great conversation with Gwilym, who leads Data Science at Royal London Group. So, a good opportunity to complement the data, BI & analytics focus of leaders interviewed already. This time we get to hear the perspective of a Data Science leader. Gwilym has both practitioner & leadership experience and shares honestly from both.

During this interview we discuss his current role and career path, including his transition from analyst to a people leader. After an impressive academic sciencific foundation, his career has taken him across several sectors (including banking & telcos) before arriving at Royal London Group.  (more…)

Audio Interviews with Customer Insight Leaders: (3) Jason Bartram

Here’s another of our audio interviews, with senior Customer Insight Leaders, this time it’s Jason Bartram.

It was enjoyable to interview Jason, a man who has clearly found a role that matters to him and society. Like many other leaders he sort of fell into this line of work, but there are some interesting lessons from his career journey. His role, as Head of Resource Planning at the Ombudsman Services, also useful extends our interviews into other analytics leadership roles in other types of organisation.

In this interview we discuss his current role and career path, including lessons learnt in the hotel trade. He has a great anecdote involving the then Home Secretary and a fight in the kitchen. Jason also explains the importance of developing resilience as a leader and how different roles have helped him develop(more…)
